Shop Feature: The Bee & The Fox

Stumbled upon The Bee & the Fox shirts on Instagram and I just fell in love with their “Mama Bird” & “Baby Bird” tees! It turns out, all their other tees are just as adorable! Today, The Bee & The Fox owner Ashley Jennett talks about how they’ve started the brand plus a bit more.

The Bee & The Fox

What’s the story behind the shop name?

The Bee & The Fox is something I started with my husband. He always calls me his “bee” and I’ve always called him my “fox”, so it was created based on our nicknames for one another. Lame, I know.

What are your top 3 favorite picks from your shop?

‘Love Your Mother’, ‘Keep on Truckin’, and ‘Born to Run’.

Can you share with us the process of creating these items?

I keep a list of ideas that I add to all the time. When I’m ready to put out a new design, I bring my ideas to our designer (who is also my best friend, which makes the whole process feel like a true labor of love) and we work together to make whatever vision was born come to life.

What do you love most about what you do?

I love seeing visions brought to life. It’s also nice to work for myself to some degree; I like owning my own mistakes and celebrating my own victories.

Is there anything you dislike about it?

The constant need to organize and fold inventory. Orders that get lost because USPS drops the ball. Shirts that unravel at the seams because American Apparel messed up. The constant mess surrounding my workspace. The fact the door at the post office is not automatic and each time I go I have to rely on some nice civilian to hold the door open for me.

What has been your biggest challenge so far and how did you overcome it? That was a game changer for us.

Where do you find inspiration?

From the past. I love the 60s & 70s and find myself wanting to recreate a feeling that was born in those decades.

Are the shirts handmade as well?

Our shirts are made in the USA and printed locally via screen print, by hand.

You have an amazing feed on Instagram, could you tell us a bit about the photos there?

The content of our Instagram feed is provided by our awesome customers that tag their images.

What can we look forward to from The Bee and The Fox in 2016?

We’re always working on new designs and have a few vintage rugs we’ll be adding to the shop as well, but we like to take things one day at a time. More than anything, we’re parents (and we’ll be adding another baby to our tribe here shortly), and much of our time is taken up tending to our boys and various life happenings. I don’t ever get done all I intend to and my to-list oftentimes gets ignored. With that said, we love what we have going and hope to continue to grow this year.

Your message to customers and friends.

Sorry, the Mama Bird tees run small, please read the item description for sizing recommendations. Ha. Also, thank you for your business. Really and truly, we have some of the kindest customers around and for those that continue to show their support and leave us positive feedback, it means so much.
