O is for Owl.
Known for their exceptional night vision and the ability to rotate their heads up to 270 degrees, owls are nocturnal hunters. They are masters of the silent flight and can sneak up on prey without being detected.
These night birds are also known for their distinctive hooting sounds. These calls are not only a means of communication but also serve to establish territory and attract potential mates.
The facial disk of an owl is not just for show. It actually functions like a satellite dish. It helps collect and funnel sound waves to their ears, aiding in precise sound localization.
There are over 200 species of owls, and they can be found on every continent except Antarctica (wikipedia). Owls can live up to 20 years in the wild.
Their unique appearance – with their big, round eyes, combined with their elusive and nocturnal behavior, makes them a favorite subject for photographers and artists. In Pop Culture, the owl is commonly portrayed as wise creature, such as the wise old owl in Winnie the Pooh.
Here is a curation of woodland inspired handmade things I found online featuring the mysterious and fascinating bird.
